Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour (TURBT)

transurethral resection of bladder tumour TURBTIt is a surgery to resect abnormal growth(s) in the urinary bladder through the urethra. The urologist inserts an instrument (called a resectoscope) through the patient’s urethra to reach the bladder and resected any abnormal growth(s) on the bladder wall using monopolar or bipolar energy platforms. The aim of the surgery is to remove all potential cancerous tissues in early stage superficial bladder cancer, and to exclude deep-seated cancers for which further radical surgery is indicated. The pieces of tissue are flushed out at the end of the procedure for histopathological examination.
